Politics and the Hometown Press

The Central Ohio Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and the Main Street Free Press Museum in Fredericktown invite you to “Politics and the Hometown Press,” 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6 at the First Baptist Church, Fredericktown.

The program will feature display of one of the most unusual newspapers ever printed. The “Calico Edition” of the Fredericktown Free Press will be shown and discussed by Mansfield historian and author Bob Carter.  The Oct. 18, 1879, edition was printed on calico instead of paper to celebrate the election as Ohio governor of Charles “Calico Charley” Foster.

Also speaking at the one-hour program will be John C. Long, museum co-founder and director, who teaches journalism at Hofstra and St. John’s universities. Long, who lives in New York City, is retired as an editor at The Wall Street Journal.

Come early to tour the Main Street Free Press Museum, which will open at 6, and enjoy the food available at the booths set up for the Fredericktown Tomato Show. (Try the Presbyterian bean soup or the Baptist pie!)

The program is free and requires no reservations. For more info and directions, visit the Museum’s Web site at www.FreePressMuseum.org or call or e-mail John C. Long at 917-693-7664 or [email protected].
