Following discussions regarding the rapid integration of new technologies in newsrooms, the Board of Directors of the Central Ohio Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists formally adopted this statement on the use of artificial intelligence in journalism.
Artificial intelligence is capable of expanding the possibilities of journalism and enhancing the productivity of journalists. But every machine can be dangerous when used recklessly or left unattended.
As members of the Central Ohio Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, we affirm that speed, technology or medium do not excuse inaccuracy or unfairness. The indiscriminate or improper use of artificial intelligence makes inaccuracy and unfairness more likely, and as such, artificial intelligence should be used judiciously and skeptically, and always with a human at the helm.
Any unfettered, unmonitored or unregulated use of AI to produce news content without appropriate transparency and oversight from trained (human) journalists is detrimental to our profession.
– The Central Ohio Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists Board of Directors
Rooted in the core principles of the national SPJ Code of Ethics, the statement reaffirms that while new technology can enhance our work, the foundational principles of accuracy, fairness, and human oversight remain non-negotiable. The board formally approved the final language during its Oct. 19 meeting.
