The 2022-23 board members for SPJ of Central Ohio.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Are you a journalist in the\u00a0Columbus<\/span>\u00a0area who wants to help teach\u00a0Columbus<\/span>\u00a0City Schools students about the news, storytelling, media ethics, and introduce them to careers in journalism? We’d love for you to volunteer as part\u00a0of<\/span>\u00a0a new program launching in 2023 called\u00a0Columbus<\/span>\u00a0Journalists<\/span>\u00a0In Training<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Columbus<\/span>\u00a0Journalists<\/span>\u00a0in Training is a partnership between the\u00a0Columbus<\/span>\u00a0Dispatch,\u00a0Columbus<\/span>\u00a0City Schools and the\u00a0Central<\/span>\u00a0Ohio<\/span>\u00a0chapter\u00a0of<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0Society<\/span>\u00a0of<\/span>\u00a0Professional<\/span>\u00a0Journalists<\/span>.<\/p>\n

This is a free, six-week journalism training program for\u00a0Columbus<\/span>\u00a0City Schools students where they will take part in interactive, engaging exercises and be coached by media professionals. The purpose is to expose students to careers in journalism and build media literacy and critical thinking skills.<\/p>\n

We’re seeking volunteers to help us put on this program and we’d love to have the students meet and learn from the people working at our local media outlets and in our community.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We’re looking for people to serve as mentors, program facilitators and experts for programming on the following dates (programming will take place roughly from 10 a.m. 1 p.m. on each\u00a0of<\/span>\u00a0these dates):
\n-Jan. 28, 2023: What is news, what it isn’t, and why it matters \/ Elements\u00a0of<\/span>\u00a0News
\n-Feb. 18, 2023: Telling a compelling story \/ crime reporting
\n-March 11, 2023: Social media
\n-April 1, 2023: Breaking news\/ broadcast practice
\n-April 22, 2023: Pursuing journalism in college
\n-May 6, 2023: Panel\u00a0of<\/span>\u00a0local\u00a0journalists<\/span>\u00a0at “graduation” session<\/p>\n
