A celebration of local journalistic talent was staged Wednesday evening, April 20, by the Central Ohio Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.<\/p>\n

At the chapter\u2019s 67th annual Founders\u2019 Day, members and guests celebrated the program year just\u00a0completed,\u00a0recognized the top\u00a0work\u00a0by\u00a0local\u00a0journalists in 2015-16,\u00a0saluted\u00a0student\u00a0journalists\u00a0who show great promise, and paid tribute to the remarkable careers of several local icons of the profession.<\/p>\n

The chapter, founded in 1949, staged the event at the Amelita\u00a0Mirolo\u00a0Barn\u00a0in Upper Arlington\u2019s Sunny 95 Park, 4395 Carriage Hill Lane.<\/p>\n

Chapter awards<\/h2>\n

The chapter\u2019s First Amendment Award<\/strong> went to Lucas Sullivan<\/strong>,<\/p>\n

the\u00a0Columbus\u00a0Dispatch<\/em>\u00a0reporter whose coverage of the\u00a0RedFlex\u00a0red light camera scandal at City Hall kept readers fascinated\u00a0over much of the past year.<\/p>\n

Its Appreciation Award<\/strong> went to\u00a0Ben\u00a0Marrison<\/strong>, who\u00a0left the Dispatch<\/em> in 2015 after a highly successful, 16-year run as its editor.<\/p>\n

Doug Buchanan<\/strong>, managing editor\/digital\u00a0for Columbus Business First<\/em>,\u00a0was honored tonight with the chapter\u2019s Distinguished Service Award<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Four remarkable careers in local journalism also were honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards <\/strong>to:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Tom\u00a0Borgerding<\/strong>,\u00a0past SPJ board member who recently wrapped up an outstanding career in local radio as he retired from WOSU;<\/li>\n
  • Doral Chenoweth<\/strong>,\u00a0still better known\u00a0in these parts\u00a0as\u00a0\u201cthe Grumpy Gourmet,\u201d\u00a0whose career actually involved so much in addition to his well-known restaurant reviews. The Grump in fact is the oldest living member of SPJ;<\/li>\n
  • Cabot Rea<\/strong>, a decades-long anchor on local TV news, who wrapped up an amazing 30-year career with WCMH-NBC4 in December; and<\/li>\n
  • The late\u00a0Mike\u00a0Bowersock<\/strong>,\u00a0a great local TV reporter,\u00a0also\u00a0with Channel 4, who died tragically after a fall this spring. His wife Lisa accepted the award on Mike\u2019s behalf.\n

    The final\u00a0Chapter\u00a0award of the evening was the Brick Wall Award<\/strong>. It is a dubious distinction presented to an individual or organization that, according to chapter members, did the most in the past year to block citizen access to public records and proceedings or otherwise violated the spirit of the First Amendment. This year our chapter voted to recognize\u00a0the faculty at <\/strong>Ohio<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Wesylan<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>University<\/strong>, who voted Monday April 18 to ban journalists from covering their faculty meetings. The meetings long have been opened and covered by local media and the student press at OWU. The\u00a0OWU faculty voted 48-21 to ban all journalists, student or otherwise, from all faculty meetings April 18.<\/p>\n

    Student scholarships<\/h2>\n

    The chapter also awarded its annual scholarships April 20. The awards and students receiving them were:<\/p>\n

    The $2,000 Jacob A.\u00a0Meckstroth Scholarship<\/strong>, named for a founding member of the chapter and Ohio State\u2019s first journalism class, went to Ohio State\u2019s Taylor Ferrell<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    The\u00a0Norman H.\u00a0Dohn\u00a0Scholarship<\/strong>, also for $2,000, is awarded by the chapter each year to a student who is an SPJ member at Ohio University.\u00a0This year\u2019s Dohn Scholarship went to Danielle Young<\/strong>,\u00a0a sophomore in OU\u2019s E.W. Scripps School of Journalism.<\/p>\n

    The\u00a0James W. Faulkner Scholarship<\/strong>\u00a0is named in memory of James W. Faulkner, the Statehouse correspondent for\u00a0The Cincinnati Enquirer, the founder of the Ohio Legislative Correspondents Association and the dean of political writers during his lifetime.<\/p>\n

    This year\u2019s winners of $1,850 each are\u00a0Michael\u00a0Huson<\/strong>, of Ohio State University and\u00a0James Steinbauer<\/strong> of Miami University.\u00a0Michael serves as campus editor for\u00a0The Lantern,\u00a0and James serves as editor of the\u00a0Miami Student.<\/p>\n

    The Marty Award<\/strong> is named in memory of the late Martin L.\u00a0Rozenman, a former Central Ohio SPJ chapter board member, editor at Suburban News Publications and Columbus Dispatch<\/em>\u00a0reporter. The\u00a0Martys\u00a0high school journalism award program is run and funded by\u00a0ThisWeek Community News and the Dispatch Magazines, and sponsored by the Central Ohio SPJ.<\/p>\n

    Winners\u00a0are chosen in five categories \u2013\u00a0newswriting, feature writing, opinion writing, sports writing and photography. From those winners, an overall, best-of-show winner is selected\u00a0\u2013 for an additional\u00a0cash award\u00a0and\u00a0recognition at the annual Founders\u2019 Day.\u00a0This year\u00a0the overall winner, The Marty, went to a pair of students from the staff of\u00a0The Torch<\/em>\u00a0student newspaper at\u00a0Bexley\u00a0High School \u2013 Aaron\u00a0Rothchild<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Grace\u00a0Maley<\/strong>. Aaron and Grace \u00a0won the Best Feature Writing category of the contest with their story, \u201cLiving Their Truths.\u201d<\/p>\n

    New officers, new board terms<\/h2>\n

    To conclude the night\u2019s business, new Central Ohio SPJ officers for the 2016-17 year were sworn in, and three members also were sworn in to new three-year terms on the chapter Board of Directors:<\/p>\n

    The 2016-17 slate of officers is:<\/p>\n

    President: Doug Buchanan<\/strong>,\u00a0managing editor-digital at\u00a0Columbus Business First<\/p>\n

    First Vice President (programming): Sarah Mills Bacha<\/strong>, SMB Communications Ltd.<\/p>\n

    Second Vice President (membership): Mary Ann Edwards<\/strong>, retired from\u00a0The Columbus Dispatch\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

    Secretary: Bruce Cadwallader,<\/strong> Franklin County Children\u2019s Services<\/p>\n

    Treasurer: Joe Meyer<\/strong>,\u00a0Meyer Media LLC<\/p>\n

    Chapter\u00a0Board\u00a0of Directors<\/strong>\u00a0members\u00a0being sworn in to new\u00a0three-year terms\u00a0were:\u00a0Doug Buchanan<\/strong>,\u00a0Columbus Business First<\/em>; Spencer Hunt<\/strong>, Student Media Director,\u00a0The Lantern<\/em>\u00a0at The Ohio State University, and; Kevin Z. Smith<\/strong>, Kiplinger Program in Public Affairs Journalism, The Ohio State University.<\/p>\n

    The Founders\u2019 Day 2016 ceremony was emceed by Central Ohio SPJ board member Karen Kasler of Ohio Public Media.<\/p>\n
