Call to order: 12:10 p.m.

Minutes approval: No minutes were available for approval from September’s meeting.

Financial: Phil Rudell reported that the balance of the chapter checking account was $7,246.71 on Sept. 10, 2012, and was $7,526.71 on Oct. 8, 2012. Q3 data on the chapter’s Vanguard accounts was still pending.

Additionally, the board discussed protocol for publicly reporting financial information. It was noted that account balances are/will be reflected in monthly board meeting notes. Should a chapter member desire further details, they need only contact the board treasurer, who will generate a report with account numbers redacted.

Membership: The board welcomed its newest member, Rick Ruan, a finance and insurance reporter at Columbus Business First.

Programming:

A) OSBA/SPJ Law & Media Conference: The Ohio State Bar Association/Central Ohio SPJ Law & Media Conference will be held on Oct. 12. It includes a great lineup of local and regional law and media experts. The chapter, as usual, will reimburse the conference for the continental breakfast (coffee, donuts, pastries).

B) Social Media Summit: Beth reported she and Doug are making progress on the chapter’s November 13 & 14 event, a social media summit. The chapter is co-sponsoring the event with Ohio State University’s Kiplinger Program. The summit will include speakers from the New York Times, the Poynter Institute and ABC News. WOSU-TV plans to videotape the summit.  The chapter is helping to promote the event and will receive a portion of ticket proceeds. The chapter does not, however, need to make a financial contribution as the event is paid for with a grant. The chapter will also help to staff registration tables and photograph the event. As of Oct. 8, 41 of 100 seats had been sold. Cost for the event is $30 for one day of sessions, $50 for two days. Chuck Nelson moved to have the board authorize an agreement with the Kiplinger Program to hold the event. Sharon West seconded the motion. The vote passed by voice.

C) December mixer with PRSA: Beth discussed she is also making progress on a December mixer with the Central Ohio Public Relations Society of America. The event could be held at the Plank’s Pizzeria on Whittier during the first week of December, possibly Dec. 6. Other locations discussed included the Buckeye Hall of Fame. The chapter would likely pay for appetizers, while those in attendance would pay for their own drinks. Beth will pursue this further and report back at the next meeting.

D) New Meeting Location: The board briefly discussed moving board meetings to a new location. After a brief back and forth, it was determined that the current location and time, Plank’s on Parsons every second Monday of the month at noon, is the best location and time.

Old Business: None

New Business:

A)   Founder’s Day Committee: Founder’s Day Committee assignments were discussed and assigned:

  • Julanne Hohbach will continue to oversee scholarships.
  • Jennifer Monnin, Chuck Nelson and Sharon West expressed an interest in serving on the Founder’s Day Committee.
  • Two potential speakers were floated as possible candidates: Gov. John Kasich and CBS News Reporter Erin Moriarty, an Upper Arlington native.

B)   National Conference: Eric Lyttle presented a summary of the national conference. Eric also mentioned that the Pittsburgh chapter may not be able to host the regional conference this year. The Central Ohio Chapter is slated to host in the spring of 2014.
