The Central Ohio SPJ Chapter is hosting a free, hands-on workshop targeted toward central Ohio journalists and communicators who are transitioning or looking for new career opportunities.

The workshop is designed for central Ohio journalists and communicators who are transitioning or considering new career opportunities and will address:

  • Skills you need to survive in the digital world;
  • Questions you may have regarding accumulated pensions and 401(k) plans;
  • Options to consider for health insurance;
  • Choices between retirement and self-employment;
  • Steps you need to know to start your own business;
  • Tools you need to launch a competitive job search;
  • Trends to know when updating your resume;

Topics will include both hard and soft skills that journalists need today to transition to new work, self-employment or retirement. Expert panelists will include:

  • Hugh Martin, an Ohio University associate professor in media economics, who will discuss current jobs in the state of Ohio that require the skills journalists have;
  • Nicole Kraft, Ohio State University assistant professor of journalism/communications, on self-branding and marketing – from web sites to social media including Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter;
  • Steph Greegor, journalist turned screenwriter, will talk about marketing oneself in a digital world and how to effectively utilize journalism skills to transition into a new field;
  • Paul J. Dolce, certified financial planner with Financial Solutions LLC, who will discuss financial decisions facing displaced workers, including 401(k)/IRA rollover, fixed-pension decisions and Social Security options;
  • Lucy Grosz, founder of Alta Vista Benefits, is an insurance professional, financial consultant/strategist and a former IT executive. She will outline health insurance options for displaced journalists, from COBRA to the Marketplace offered through the Affordable Care Act;
  • Celia Crossley, founder of Crosworks, a career and human resources consulting practice that specializes in guiding individuals and organizations through periods of change. She will discuss how to win job offers in the evolving workplace and creating a dynamite resume for the process;
  • Robin Hepler, senior director of public affairs for the Ohio Hospital Association, and a former journalist, will share her insights about why journalism skills are a good match for a career in public affairs and public relations;
  • Celina Fabrizio, assistant vice president of Paul Werth Associates, and a former television broadcaster, will talk about journalists transitioning into public affairs and public relations.
  • Dan Trevas, a former journalist turned lawyer with extensive public relations experience in the public and private sector, who is presently a Judicial Systems Writer in the Public Information Office of the Ohio Supreme Court, will talk about the importance of setting up a LLC for free-lancers;
  • Kevin Peterman, CPA, Toukan & Company, will talk about what free-lancers and small businesses need to know about taxes.
